Bye Bye Birdie -Musical Set Design/Production

The Telephone Number!! This rolling jungle gym was a metal fabrication by Jay Pynn.
This was a show I designed for Footlight Theatre Company in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. It was a musical called "Bye Bye Birdie", set in the 50s, with an Elvis type character. I wanted to do a 1950s modern design and keep it fun and colorful! The set was constructed by Jeff Cox and Jay Pynn. I was lead painter. Please enjoy the pics!

I have also included some pictures of the set maquette (or Model) to compare.

This is the House set. Everything is on wheels.
The stove is made from wood! Everything had the dark lines for a 1950s cartoonist look.

The Magic Flute-Quest for the Box of Shadows-Vancouver Opera in the Schools

Hey everyone! This was a really cool project, and a very "west coast" project. In 2006-2007 I was hired as a design intern for the Vancouver Opera’s New Production of “The Magic Flute”. This production was to be presented in a West Cost First Nations style and I was brought in to contribute creatively and also assist the lead set designer.

I was also hired as Lead Designer for the Vancouver Opera’s School Touring Production of “The Magic Flute-Quest for the Box of Shadows”.

In this smaller production I was asked to design the Set, Costumes, and Masks. This was also done with the same West Coast First Nations Influence.

The centre wall is a fabric that can have projections/shadows on it from the rear.

Below are some costume/mask and Prop design drawings from the production:

I hope you enjoyed these pictures. Thanks again!

Country House Front Porch Re-Model

North Facing View

This was a front porch Re-model I did at a country house in Calling Lake Alberta. The space was unused and the clients wanted a space to relax in, entertain in and also add more square footage to the home.

The South facing view. The Light pours in and really adds magic.

I really enjoyed this project and I think the clients were very happy. Its a beautiful place and I love visiting, having Ice tea and enjoying the views. Enjoy the pics and process.

I started with concepts for how I wanted the space to look and feel. I really think this was realized. I wanted to use antiques that the client had to create a modern farmhouse aesthetic.
Concept Board

The color palette was serene and calming, as well as complementary to the natural environment.

This daybed is for reading or sleeping...or both. The bed is an old antique school bed. I created the canopy.
This old cabinet was painted white and is used to display antiques and collectibles.

Palm Trees add a tropical "Vacation" feel. The cushions were sewn by the client.

This double door was salvaged from the local dump and painted a sage green.

Below are some pics of the building Process:
This was the deck before....outdoor storage. The walls were removed for the reno, painted, then put back in.

It all began with a new floor.

Lights are installed

New ceiling looks great, ready for white wash, very prairie style.
